Prospect Book Club – Julia Lovell
Chairman Mao’s revolution changed the course of history. But that revolution wasn’t confined to China: Maoism spread all over the world, fomenting revolutions and upending certainties. Most recently John McDonnell, Labour’s Shadow Chancellor, has brandished his Little Red Book in the Commons.
In this new history, Julia Lovell re-evaluates Maoism as both a Chinese and an international force, linking its evolution in China with its global legacy. It is a story that takes us from the tea plantations of north India to the sierras of the Andes, from Paris’s fifth arrondissement to the fields of Tanzania, from the killing fields of Cambodia to the terraces of Brixton.
Lovell is one of our finest historians, the author of an acclaimed book on the opium wars. Maoism: Global History is set to be one of the non-fiction classics of 2019.
