As a regular "Prospect" reader, I had always thought Mr King, in line with the magazine's editorial policy, was unbiased. After reading his many anti-Sarkozy remarks, I realize I was wrong. As to the student anti-Sarkozy movement alluded to by Val, this was sparked off by 'petit bourgeois' Left-wing teachers , nothing being easier than to get students out into the streets, often not knowing what they are there for. Sarkozy's plans to double the number of places in Polytechnics, give more money to the universities and get students better orientation advice in their studies is something we have been waiting for for thirty years. It should be noted that teachers generally avoid sending thier offspring to universdity: they opt for the 'classes préparatoires' and, if possible, one of the 'grandes écoles'. As a whole, the language used by the anti-Sarkozy movement has in its excess and insulting nature, shown that there are plenty of neo-Nazis to counterbalance the National Front - as it used to be.

Bonjour, thanks for this intelligent/original analysis, I am french currently living in Dublin, and I find it reassuring and relieving some people in GB/Ireland really try to take some distance, try to understand what s happening and dont follow the mainstream. After the last elections we(socialists) checked the main British and US political newspapers and were not surprised to find out that Sarkozy was presented as a blessing for outmoded, old fashioned France, but reality is more complex and critical thinking is at stake.

17 000 000 millions people(lecturers, teachers, gps, social workers, graduate students, etc...)have voted "no" to Sarkozy who embodies censorship, violent capitalism, expulsions of migrants,a setback for civil rights/social rights/trade unions, and disinformation(control of the medias).

As France plays a key role within international organizations, in international Politics/Relations,Mr Sarkozy s election is not only bad news for France.France has always been a counter power and a counter weight,we were proud to say no to this stupid war in Iraq and we would say" no" again, now that our president rides horses with a cowboy hat and that is government is sold to us liberalism/capitalism, stock exchanges and financial markets, who will stand up against their(markets) Law?

France has always been fighting for more social justice/at the expense of pure capitalism/big money/stock exchanges dictatorship. That's what Mr Bush/Mr Blair(bye Tony)and their medias call being old fashioned and outmoded.Funny.We dont share their views. No society should be called "modern, developped ,fair, wealthy"unless it has reached some degree of SOCIAL JUSTICE.And we are proud of being a little old fashioned in this way.Because this capitalist world is violent and because Revolt against the law of the strongest/wealthiest is our Past(historically).Today more than ever we believe it is our Future as well.

Bien à vous,Val.
